Abstract
Protection of the microgrid is a challenging problem due to the incorporation of power electronics converters. These converters limit the fault current which is difficult to be detected by the existing methods alone. This paper presents a differential phase-angle based fault detection scheme. A medium voltage grid, integrated with solar and wind plants, is simulated in real time digital simulator (RTDS) platform for the present study. Three C37.118.1 complied GTNET phasor measurement units (PMUs) are placed at appropriate locations to obtain the voltage phase-angle information. The absolute phase-angle difference of phase voltage between the point of common coupling (PCC) and the bus close to the faulted line are used as the actuating parameter for detection of fault condition in the grid. The suggested scheme is being tested for different faults and different operating conditions extensively. The simulation results justify that the proposed scheme can be an effective way for the protection of microgrid from numerous abnormal conditions. 2018 IEEE.
