Abstract
In dc-dc converters, the role of an inductor is to store energy during one switching interval, and transfer this stored energy during another interval. The ripple content in the inductor current depends upon the inductance value. In dc-ac inverter applications, inductors are part of the filter network interfacing the power electronic switches to the ac side. In these applications, passive filters such as L- or LCL-type configurations are used to eliminate switching frequency harmonics generated by the inverter switch configuration. In both the above mentioned applications, the procedure for inductor design involves solution of sets of generalized equations. During the design phase, when the design conditions are revised, the same set of equations need to be computed again resulting in iteration. In this work, the process of inductor design for power electronic converters has been simplified by developing an interactive tool using MATLAB simulation software which aids in evaluating the design equations. The user interactive nature of the application waits for user input in case a design decision is required to be made. The paper addresses all the major steps associated with inductor design e.g., calculation of inductance, selection of core and wire using the developed application. The operation of the application with respect to dc-dc converters and inverter is presented. 2021 IEEE.
